BLACK CATS PILATES

Gentle yet effective exercise offering both physical and well-being benefits

Whether you’re already physically active or you’re thinking of doing more to get your body moving, Pilates is a great choice of exercise as it can be practiced in conjunction with sport by improving core strength and joint mobility/stability or simply enjoyed as a stand-alone activity, helping to increase muscle strength, endurance and tone. Pilates exercises also relieve stress and tension, leaving you feeling relaxed and refreshed.

A BIT ABOUT ME...

Hi, I'm Sarah!  A happily married, step-mum of two, Level 3 Mat Pilates and Anatomy & Physiology qualified Instructor (now there's a mouthful!), who is very passionate about Pilates!

Having overcome a severe low back issue a couple of years ago (suspected herniated disc) - thanks to the aid of my brother (a Physiotherapist) and being recommended Pilates, I was keen to understand the Pilates method and how it is so effective in terms of rehabilitation following injury, which ultimately led to me gaining my qualification.

I'm really proud of my business in York since it started in September 2019 and I love teaching Pilates! Being able to help people overcome pain and/or injury or teach those who simply enjoy Pilates is very rewarding.  My classes are inclusive, fun and relaxed where everyone feels at ease and leaves feeling good!

NB: Why is it called Black Cats Pilates?

Well, I just so happen to be an animal lover and own a beautiful little kitty called Sookie. She sauntered past me one day with her 'puurrrfect posture' and that was it... name sorted!

PILATES IS FOR EVERYONE... AND HERE'S WHY...

All ages, fitness levels and abilities welcome! Pilates is a great way to keep your joints healthy as well as strengthening the body, helping to reduce the risk of injury, improve general fitness and well-being and also ease aches and pains.

Did you know that Pilates is becoming more popular among athletes and sports people as it can complement training by developing whole-body strength and flexibility, and help reduce the risk of injury?

Muscle tone is usually lost with age and inactivity so Pilates is particularly beneficial for older people and those who lead a more sedentary lifestyle.

It promotes joint health by increasing flexibility as well as strengthening under-used muscles to help reduce the risk of injury from everyday activities. It’s amazing how quickly you’ll notice a difference after just a few sessions.

As well as physical benefits, Pilates is great for your well-being, helping to reduce stress levels, making you feel more relaxed and refreshed...

It's also recommended for those who are keen runners!

(If you have any health concerns, such as a health condition or an injury, seek advice from your GP or a health professional before starting any exercise programme).

CURIOUS?...

Why should I do Pilates?

Originally called ‘Contrology’, the concept was devised by Joseph Pilates 100 years ago, when he created rehabilitation exercises for soldiers recovering from injuries in their beds during WWI. He then went on to teach the exercises to ballet dancers as a means of helping them to overome their injuries.

The concept has been studied by scientists and health professionals since then and it is widely recognised as being extremely beneficial for promoting joint mobility and spinal health. When practiced regularly, it helps to reduce the risk of injury from carrying out daily activities as well as relieving existing pain and/or stiffness from wear and tear and/or injury.

It’s a great way to help safeguard your joints for the future and also for getting your body moving from lack of physical activity. Poor posture, caused from sitting at a desk for prolonged periods of time, e.g., is also one of the main causes of back pain. Pilates can help to relieve these problems by improving posture and helping to keep the spine and joints healthy.

GP’s and Physiotherapists recommend Pilates as part of a prescribed treatment progam particularly for back or shoulder pain.

I’ve never done Pilates before, is it difficult?

Pilates exercises range from beginner to advanced. If you’ve never done it before don’t worry,  all exercises are designed to work within the natural range of bodily movement, so you wont be asked to do anything acrobatic! The exercises can also be modified or have alternatives to suit all fitness and capability levels.

I don’t have the time to exercise

Lets face it, life is busier now than ever so finding the time to do anything is hard. Sometimes the last thing you feel like doing is exercising but Pilates is different, the exercise options allow you to challenge yourself at your own pace. Classes are also only 45 minutes long and the time goes by really quickly!

In addition to the physical benefits, Pilates classes are designed to be relaxing and stress-relieving. It’s a great way to focus on yourself, taking time out of your busy schedule to give your mind a break, to unwind as well as doing something good for your body. Most people come out of a class feeling like they’ve not only had a full body work out, but also rested and revived. It’s very therapeutic and not uncommon to see people yawn! (in a good way of course!)

I don’t know what to wear

Anything comfy! No need to go all out and buy a whole new gym kit, just wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move without restriction (nothing too baggy). You don’t even need a pair of trainers, just some non-slip socks will do (or even bare feet).

You’re also free to bring your own mat but there are some here for you to use if you prefuurrrrrrr!

I ‘d be delighted for you to join in and see what it’s all about!
